I have quite the stock of film in my fridge at this point and reached out to a handful of people about setting up a shoot. Monique asked about shooting her Revy cosplay and I was game. It was easy to find a marina setting, even in a desert city. I decided to try out Lomography CN800 for this shoot. I had shot CN100 and CN400 and enjoyed the tones of each and CN800 did not let me down. The 800 speed also gave me flexibility working with the sunset and lens filters without much concern of shutter speed.
The 800 certainly has a lot of grain, but the texture is not all undesirable. The sharpness isn’t quite what I’d experienced with other 800 speed films, such as Porta and Cinestill, but this wasn’t exactly a scientific comparison. The deep blues in the shadow and saturated oranges (boosted by a sunset gradient filter) certainly hit the vibes I was aiming for. The sunset gradient filter is one I rarely use, as I tend to forget that I have it. I typically employ the diffusion and CPL filters on most shoots. I mostly stuck with the Voightlander Nokton 58mm F/1.4 during this shoot; which has been a bit much of a trend for me. I did make some use of my recently neglected Nikkor 105mm F/2.5 My reluctance to shoot wider and the need for a lot of space for the 105mm tend to keep me working in the nifty fifty range more than I intend.
While Benny drives a Plymouth GTX in the anime, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to shoot with some American muscle. This Hellcat Redeye was staged while the owner (@dodge_vader98 on IG) was taking some photos of their own. I managed to catch him just before he left to pair with Revy to finish off the roll of film. I haven’t stuck much to my moniker of Cars and Cosplay in the past year or so and would like to get back on track, but this’ll have to be a start. CN800 handles contrast and black points quite well as these photos with the Hellcat really balanced well. The bloom of the headlights provided by the Tiffen Black ProMist filter 1/4 also played well into the shot.
